About Our New Home
The new home of the Barnstable Historical Society is located at 3087 Main Street in Barnstable Village—diagonally across the street from our old location.
Sylvanus B. Phinney built the house in 1834 on land purchased from Henry Crocker and Isaac Lothrop. Phinney then sold the dwelling to Peter Pineo and his wife Elizabeth in 1850. In 1852, Dr. Pineo sold the property and dwelling to Kimball R. Smith. After Smith's death in 1863, his heirs Flavilla Smith and Frederick Smith lived in the house until 1876 when it was sold to Mrs. Helen Howes. The next owner, Smith K. Hopkins, bought the house in 1882. In 1946 Warren and Lucille Jones purchased the house. The Jones family lived there until the Barnstable Historical Society took up residence in 2010.
